Grammar note

一下 is placed after a verb and serves two functions: (1) it indicates the action is brief or done once: 看一下 "take a quick look"; (2) it softens the tone of an imperative, making it more polite: 等一下 sounds less abrupt than 等. It is very common in everyday speech.
